Custom Box Styles Explained: Tuck-End, Mailer, Rigid, Sleeve & More
"Box style" refers to how a box is constructed and closed — and it's a different decision from the material. The right style depends on your product weight, where it sells, and the unboxing you want. Most US brands choose from a handful: tuck-end cartons for retail, mailer boxes for shipping, rigid boxes for luxury, and sleeves or specialty shapes for a distinctive look. Here's what each style is and when to use it.
Straight tuck end (STE)
The classic retail folding carton: both top and bottom flaps tuck in on the same side (the back). Clean front face for branding, economical, ships flat. Ideal for lightweight retail products like cosmetics, supplements, and electronics accessories. See custom tuck end boxes.
Reverse tuck end (RTE)
Similar to STE but the top and bottom flaps tuck from opposite sides. It's the most economical folding carton to die-cut, which makes it a favorite for cost-sensitive retail runs where the front panel still needs full branding. See reverse tuck end boxes.
Mailer box
A one-piece corrugated box with a self-locking lid and side wings that fold and lock without tape — built to survive shipping and create an unboxing moment. The DTC and subscription standard, printable inside and out. See custom mailer boxes.
Rigid (setup) box
Thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper — the premium, non-collapsing box used for luxury goods, fine fragrance, and gift sets. Supports magnetic closures, ribbon pulls, and foam inserts. Highest perceived value; ships assembled. See custom rigid boxes.
Sleeve box
A printed outer sleeve that slides over an inner tray or box — great for a layered reveal and for products you want to show off with a partial wrap. Popular for chocolates, soaps, and premium retail. See custom sleeve boxes.
Drawer (slide) box
An inner tray that slides out of an outer shell like a matchbox — a tactile, premium open that suits jewelry, accessories, and gift sets. See custom drawer boxes.
Gable and pillow boxes
Specialty shapes that stand out on a shelf or gift table. Gable boxes have a handle-top, carry-home look ideal for food and party favors; pillow boxes have a curved, soft form perfect for small accessories, jewelry, and lightweight gifts.
How to choose a style
- Selling on a retail shelf? Tuck-end carton (STE/RTE) — economical, flat front for branding.
- Shipping direct to customers? Mailer box — durable and built for unboxing.
- Premium or gift product? Rigid, sleeve, or drawer box for a high-end open.
- Want to stand out? Gable, pillow, or a custom die-cut shape.
Style and material combine: a tuck-end can be SBS or kraft; a mailer is corrugated; a rigid box is chipboard. If you're weighing options, our material guide pairs naturally with this one.
