Custom Boxes — Trends & Tips for 2026

Packaging trends move slower than fashion, but they move. Here's what US brands are actually picking for their custom box runs in 2026, based on the orders we're printing.

1. Soft-touch lamination is the new gloss

Gloss laminate used to be the default "premium" choice. In 2026, soft-touch (matte rubberized feel) has won — it photographs better, holds up to handling without showing fingerprints, and instantly reads as $$$. We're laminating about 60% of our cosmetics and gift boxes with soft-touch this year, up from 25% in 2022.

2. Minimal kraft for "natural" and "clean" brands

Indie skincare, soap, candles, and food brands are all gravitating toward uncoated natural kraft with a single-color logo print — usually black or a brand-specific spot color. The look reads as "eco" / "artisan" / "small batch" without saying any of those things. Pairs especially well with one-color foil accent if you want a step up.

3. Foil accents (not full foil)

Full foil-covered boxes peaked in 2019. The current move is selective foil — just the logo, just one word, just the brand mark. The contrast against an otherwise restrained design is what does the work.

4. QR-code unboxing flows

This one is new. Brands are printing QR codes on the inside of the lid that link to a product registration page, an unboxing video, a how-to-use page, or a "thank you" video from the founder. The conversion rate from QR scan to email signup is surprisingly high — we've heard 40%+ for brands that lead with founder-authentic content.

5. Eco-grade rigid (recyclable luxury)

Customers who buy premium products increasingly want to feel good about disposing of the packaging. We're getting more requests for chipboard cores (recyclable) wrapped in FSC-certified paper, with water-based inks and no plastic film — premium look, fully recyclable. Brands like Verve Coffee and Susanne Kaufmann are doing this well.

6. Inner surprise (printed inside)

Printing the inside of the box — a pattern, a "thank you", a brand story, or just a contrasting color — costs a tiny premium and dramatically improves the unboxing photo. It's the cheapest meaningful upgrade you can make to an existing packaging design.

Custom Box Printing produces all of the above for US brands — short runs from 100 units, free design support, free US shipping. Request a free quote or design your box in 3D.

Ordering custom boxes — common questions

What is the minimum order for custom boxes?

Runs start at 100 units for folding cartons (cosmetic, food, bakery, CBD, mailer), 50 units for rigid setup boxes, and 5,000 units for printed paper (deli, butcher, tissue, kraft, sandwich wrap). No die, plate, or setup fees at any quantity.

Do you ship custom boxes free in the US?

Yes — standard shipping is free anywhere in the contiguous United States on every order. Rush production (3–5 business days) and expedited shipping are available for an additional fee.

How long does a custom box order take?

Typical timeline is 1 business day for a quote, 1–2 days to approve a free 3D digital mockup, then 7–10 business days for production plus 2–5 business days for free US shipping. Rush production is available on request.

Can I see a sample before I commit to a full order?

Yes — free 3D digital mockup with every quote, and a physical sample on request (refunded on your first order) before you place a production run. You can also design and preview your box live in our free 3D box designer.

What artwork files do you need to start printing?

Print-ready PDF, AI, EPS, or PSD at 300 DPI in CMYK with 0.125" bleed is ideal. Don't have artwork? Our in-house design team builds your dieline and preps files at no cost — just send your logo and any brand references.

Do you charge setup, plate, or die-cutting fees?

No — there are no setup, plate, die, or tooling fees at any quantity. Custom dielines, artwork prep, 3D mockups, and physical samples are all included free with every order.
