Box Material Guide: Kraft vs SBS vs Corrugated vs Rigid

For most US brands the choice comes down to four materials: SBS for vivid retail print, kraft for a natural/eco look, corrugated for shipping strength, and rigid chipboard for luxury. The right one depends on whether your box ships solo, sits on a shelf, or delivers a premium unboxing. Here's how each behaves so you can choose with confidence.

SBS (solid bleached sulfate) — the retail workhorse

SBS is a smooth, bright-white paperboard and the default for product boxes that need photo-quality print. It takes full-color CMYK beautifully and pairs with soft-touch, matte, or gloss lamination, foil stamping, and spot UV. It's the standard for color cosmetics, skincare, supplements, and most folding cartons.

• Best for: cosmetic and skincare boxes, supplements, retail folding cartons.
• Print: excellent — brightest whites and most accurate color.
• Typical thickness: 14pt–24pt.

Kraft — natural, eco, and food-friendly

Kraft is unbleached brown paperboard with a recycled, organic look that clean-beauty, artisan, and food brands use to signal sustainability. Print shows up muted and earthy on the brown stock (whites won't pop the way they do on SBS), which is exactly the aesthetic many natural brands want. Recycled and FSC-certified options are available.

• Best for: kraft boxes, handmade soap, natural skincare, bakery and food.
• Print: good for logos/line art; full-color reads earthy, not vivid.
• Eco angle: recyclable, often recycled-content, FSC stocks available.

Corrugated — strength for shipping

Corrugated is the fluted board (a wavy inner layer between two liners) that survives the carrier journey. It's what mailer and shipping boxes are made from. Single-wall is plenty for most e-commerce; double-wall adds protection for heavier or fragile goods. Modern corrugated prints in full color, so your shipping box can also be your best brand impression.

• Best for: mailer boxes, corrugated shipping boxes, subscription boxes.
• Print: full-color inside and out; great for unboxing.
• Strength: single-wall for most; double-wall for heavy/fragile.

Rigid chipboard — the luxury tier

Rigid (setup) boxes are thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper — the non-folding, substantial box you get with premium electronics, fine fragrance, and luxury gift sets. They command the highest perceived value and support magnetic closures, ribbon pulls, and foam inserts, at a higher per-unit cost and larger shipping footprint (they ship assembled, not flat).

• Best for: rigid boxes, luxury gift sets, premium fragrance, limited editions.
• Print: excellent via a printed wrap; supports premium finishes.
• Trade-off: highest cost, ships assembled (more freight).
